We chatted to rising indie-pop star K¥LO about Janis Joplin, influences, and what’s in store for the future
K¥LO makes experimental electronic pop music that defies the norm. The talented singer songwriter grew up listening to an extremely eclectic mix of music but decided to focus in on an electronic sound and move to Toronto to develop her music career.
K¥LO’s second EP was released in 2016 and since then she has been playing in various prestigious venues in and around Canada, all the while continuing to write and record new material for her unique music project.
To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
How did it all start for you?
Probably when I started doing musical theatre as a kid…then I started developing my own music taste and really wanting to create my own original stuff around the age of 12. That’s when I started writing songs, and eventually taught myself guitar around the age of 15, and it all sort of snowballed from there with writing and experimenting with music.
What three albums would you say influenced your sound the most?
That’s a really hard question haha. I can’t really say just 3..cause if you go way back to when I started listening to music I could name a Johnny Cash or Beatles record, then of course there’s Blink-182 which completely took over my teenage years and had a huge impact on me, as well as Sublime…then fast forward to now where I would have to say Visions by Grimes or Goddess by Banks….ya I could go on and on haha 3’s just too hard.
Are there any key pieces of equipment that you can’t live without?
Def into mic pedals right now.
What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.
Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash old school country, The Beatles, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, ****Janis Joplin*****, Woodstock and that whole era in general…Blink182, No Doubt, Sublime and the whole emo era was for sure me in high school and a big influence for me…Barbarella, Donnie Darko, Moulin Rouge…Tove Lo’s Habits, old Grimes, Banks, SZA, Purity Ring, Abra, Blood Orange, Solange,Mura Masa…Outer Space in general, mermaids, red lights, nudity, animals, flowers….I could go on but ya I think that gives you a good idea haha..oh and definitely Christina not Britney lol
